Making a banner ad? Try proofreading — part 3!

mcdonaldsbadad1.jpgTime for another edition of “Proofread Your Ad Banner… Or Die”!!! This time around we’re not looking at your usual typo or spell check error, it’s something much more disturbing. Not only is it disturbing, it’s a bit insulting to us geek-types in the same way as Dell’s FTW campaign. Maybe even worse!

See the banner to the right? This was floating all over IGN’s website today. Notice anything wrong? I certainly did. That sequence of controller buttons looks a lot like the Konami code. Only… wait, what’s this? “…Left Right A B Start” A before B? Oh no no no!

If I recall correctly (and Wikipedia verifies that I do), the Konami code is as follows: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A. That’s right, B A, as in BAd job with your BAnner, McDonalds. I wanted to make some sort of copyright-related excuse, but alas, it’s purely a case of a corporation trying to appeal to us, the cool gamer crowd, by tasking a soccer mom with creating an ad campaign. Better luck next time, McDonalds.
