Fan-made Mother 4 in the works

With the release of Mother 3, creator Shigesato Itoi said the series was complete. The fans have other plans. Officially announced yesterday and with its own website today, Mother 4 is an in-progress fan sequel to the EarthBound series. The team is just a few members at the moment (one of whom is associated with Starmen.net), so only a skeletal game engine has been created along with 15% of the story being complete. The team seems determined to produce a high-quality sequel that could sit comfortably with the rest of the series. Knowing the extreme level of devotion EarthBound fans tend to exhibit, I have no reason to doubt them! I do, however, know how most fan projects go, so I’ll hold my careful hopes in a little jar until I see the project really flourish.

Awesome! Maybe I will be able to play it on my OpenPandora, if it’s arrived by the time they finish the game. I also might have finished Mother 3 by then… (actually I’m getting pretty close. DCMC concert chapter 8).

I love how much attention they get just for naming it something as audacious as “Mother 4″. And by “love”, I mean “hate”. It’s just another fan game, people!

  3. Adrian says:

No shit, anon. The way some people go on about this game and its maker, you’d think he was fucking Itoi or something. The little shit isn’t even making the game, he’s simply farming the work out to people twice as talented and half as stupid as he is. I can understand why Mother fans are desperate, but thats no reason to feed a serious case of unwarranted self-importance…

I would honestly be surprised if this game ever came to fruition. It’s ambitious, but all fan games are, and so many of them tank it’s not even funny. How many Chrono Trigger “sequels” have been announced only to vanish weeks/months later? Tons. This isn’t even the first Mother sequel to appear! We’ll just have to wait and see what happens with this little game…

  5. Chaisu’s game doesn’t even fit in with the series, from what I’ve seen of it. The other all connect plotwise. There’s another one that gets no attention that will probably be a better sequel, so we’ll see. In general, this one’s an attention hog that will blind everyone from seeing anything else as a Mother 4, and I can already tell you that the composers have no idea what the hell they’re doing. I do know that one for sure. Look for the little, slow, and steady projects, not the one that sparkles like Twilight.

What’s wrong with you people? This may be another fangame, but this one’s for real. To anyone who’s actually followed the progress of this game, this isn’t just another dumb teenager with rpg maker that decided he’s going to make Mother 4. His vision matches that of Itoi, and that’s why people act like he IS itoi. His programmer’s a pro, he’s got some real proffessional spriting happening and his writer has published work. Not to mention the people he has doing his music. Sure, he’s using alot of other people’s talents but that’s what makes this real. Itoi didnt make the other games alone. He’s got pros working for him, and you’re acting like putting all that work into one thing isn’t a huge job alone. This game is probably going to come out and shock all of us. I know im putting alot of faith into it, but it’s by far the most legitimate thing i’ve seen yet.

    Something to look at. http://mother4.dcmsoftware.net/

Where’s the other projects’ standalone web pages?

  8. Anonymous says:

Starman: You mean like the one for Cognitive Dissonance, a project that actually showed regular progress? http://cogdis.tazmily.com/ Or the one for 2015 that’s gone now because it didn’t and died?

Anyway, don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see this little project succeed and be awesome. But it pisses me off how much attention this guy gets just for misusing words like “official” and acting like he’s channeling Itoi.

  9. Starman 2 says:

    Ya but CD was terrible.

  10. Brian the Analytical Guy says:

I’m not here to endlessly praise the guy, just here to clear up some misinformed people.
Chaisu doesn’t consider himself ‘Official’, the only times I’ve seen him use that word is the ‘Official Fan Game Website’ (Which is true, it’s the official website for their fan game.), and that his team and he are trying to make the game feel official, which is a good aspiration! I personally don’t have any recollection of Chaisu trying to ‘Channel Itoi’, he’s just trying to imitate his style and use his writing style and from what he’s said, he’s studied into the writing of Itoi and is trying to incorporate many ideas and preferences Itoi’s stated in his numerous interviews (Which, accordingly, Chaisu has tried to locate every interview and studied Itoi’s mannerisms).

Another thing I read up there, attention hog? Really? From what I’m observing (And I’m an outsider. I really haven’t followed the project that much until reading these comments) you can’t call them attention hogs just because their site is pretty and their screenshots are pretty. That would be like calling The Beatles attention hogs because their music is great. If anyone’s to blame for that, (along with them being accused of calling themselves ‘official’) it would be the overexcited fans that let their words get the best of them. So far, little has been released, but I see their technique. They’ve meticulously tried to give away spoiler-free content little by little, just because I have a feeling when this trailer that’s supposed to happen comes out, they want a nice surprise factor to make the non-believers see what they’re all about.

Here’s a comment that really interested me, by our friend Adrian:
“The little shit isn’t even making the game, he’s simply farming the work out to people twice as talented and half as stupid as he is.”
Now, after observing things carefully and not letting the input of the fans get in the way of the actual content they’re displaying, I can hardly see how this is true, and is yet another example of misinformed hatred of fan games. According to Chaisu, he has made all of the graphics (sans a few minor GUI sprites) from scratch 100% (Not even the latest update of the main character is an edit. A big change from all of the other fan games, which also goes to show how much detail is being put into even the smallest of content they’ve unveiled to us.) so I hardly see how the guy isn’t doing any work. Not to mention, he’s stated clearly that he’s been designing nearly everything else, overseeing the entire project and even with things like music, he oversees the entire production of every song to ensure its’ perfection. Oh, did I mention he’s writing it? With help from his co-writer, Zephys. Hopefully now you can give some credit where apparently it’s due.

Okay, next? John is our next contestant. I understand how you feel with fangames being usually canceled, but it is to be expected. You try getting a team of people to do something that requires an extreme amount of talent, time, and dedication, and not to mention, some team somewhere is doing the same thing and getting payed, and see how long they’ll last.
This could be hopeful though, Chaisu has had the organizational skills and networking skills to keep this thing going thus far (About a year) so I’m not sure if they’re thinking about giving up any time soon.

Who’s next on the list… “Another Anonymous Starmen member.” (I’m guessing TCAnimorph, the creator of that OTHER Mother 4..) You mentioned ‘Chaisu’s game doesn’t even fit in with the series, from what I’ve seen of it. The other all connect plotwise.’ (I’m guessing TCAnimorph because of a certain comment that person left on his thread.)
All I have to say about this, is it is a very bold statement, considering what little has been shown about the game, and Chaisu has never stated it won’t connect plot-wise. If he’s going where Itoi went with the previous Mother games, well then of course the connection won’t be visible! Mother and Mother 2… The only obvious connection was Giygas. Mother 2 and Mother 3… Porky. The rest is a complete blur in between games, and the only other connections would be gameplay elements and certain continuing traditions (That Chaisu is appearently trying to continue.)
Other fan games, from what I’ve seen, are trying to directly continue another Mother game, and that’s just step 1 of where they go wrong.
“I can already tell you that the composers have no idea what the hell they’re doing.”
Yet another bold misinformed statement. Don’t try to condemn an idea before you even have any information about what you’re discussing… It is blatantly obvious these people know exactly what they’re doing.

That’s all I have to say concerning the subject, and I hope the game turns out great! I hope ANY game turns out great, for that matter. I feel anyone who condemns any game prior to actually seeing and playing it is just an uneducated, closed mind. You can’t see the future, you can’t determine a book by its’ cover no matter how hard you try.

    Thank you!

  11. Zephys says:

I tend to avoid getting involved in external Mother 4 related conversations myself, but I have to give Brian a giant thank you here. Kudos to you, brian. Thank you for your support.

  12. Starman says:

    Lol brian pwned everyone.
