The deservedly popular Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogotari) has, in addition to near-flawless game design, one of the best original soundtracks of any game out there, freeware or otherwise. The melody of simple tunes are unbelievably catchy. When asked about his musical prowess, Cave Story creator Pixel had this to say:
Sounds good to me. I love the soundtrack and have had it on my portable music player for over a year now. The Cave Story remix project gathers several musicians to create tribute tunes to almost a dozen Cave Story songs. The results are, in my opinion, hit-and-miss, but it’s interesting to hear some more complex renditions of the old favs. Everything from piano to alternative, techno and orchestral is here, so give it a listen and decide for yourself.
