Cave Story on the Eee PC

It’s been just over three days since I got the deliciously compact Eee PC. Most of my initial issues are starting to fade (I’m actually adapting to the tiny keyboard) and it’s been nothing but thrill after thrill since then. A 12 second boot time to check e-mail means the whole process is complete in just over a minute. Can’t beat that.

In my quest to get comfortable with Linux, my first project was to get a decent game on the system. Purely as a learning experience, I assure you. Cave Story was an obvious first choice, so I went hunting for a compatible Linux version. The first one was a dead link, so I went my secondary route was to install Wine and run the PC version. After a few Linux/Wine crash courses, I had everything set and finally managed to get Cave Story on my screen. The second that familiar theme started playing was a triumphant moment. I had conquered something. Kinda sad what passes for “conquering” nowdays, isn’t it?

The next day, like computer magic, it wouldn’t run, and Wine delivered error messages no one seems to have heard of. So I continued my hunt for a Linux version, finally found one, untarred the sucker and it worked like a charm. The only issue is the screen resolution which stretches itself to the Eee PCs odd 800×480. Back to the forums, blogs and wikis…
